Hayao Miyazaki’s 74th Birthday!!

First things first. I want to apologize to you all for being absent for months. Life got a little hectic and I wasn’t able to blog for a while, but its a new year with lots of new anime so lets start fresh and pretend that I never left.

(Gomenasai!!!)giphy

Now for my tribute to the man whose work changed my life forever, Hayao Miyazaki. The first anime I ever saw was Spirited Away with Chihiro and Nigihayami Kohaku Nushi, better known as Haku. (Yes I know his full name. Don’t judge me!) I was so obsessed with the animation style and the way in which the story was portrayed that I had to watch more films by this legendary creator and so I fell in love. My hours began being consumed by My Neighbor Totoro and Howl’s Moving Castle reruns, late nights with Ponyo and Sasuke, and wondering how I could meet a guy like Seiji Amasawa from Whisper of the Heart. Miyazaki’s movies never cease to amaze me. The stories he tells through animation are so magical and heart warming that you can’t help but smile every time you see them.

So to the master story-teller, Happy Birthday Miyazaki-san!

Isshuukan Friends Episode 9

Isshuukan Friends: Episode 9

Screen Shot 2014-06-08 at 12.49.06 AM

First things first… A NEW SHIP! Kiryu-kun and Saki-chan have the potential to be a perfect couple. What’s great about them is that they’re relationship is slowly being revealed in the simplest ways. Take the scene in episode 9 for example, Saki-chan couldn’t reach an ingredient from the shelf and without hesitation Kiryu-kun stepped in behind her to give her a hand. On the surface Kiryu-kun is the strong-silent type, but I can’t help and think that if you dig a little deeper you’ll find something more… something enticing and loving. He’s the type that wants you to think he doesn’t care about anything, but he obviously cares about Saki-chan. In this episode Kaori-chan invites the gang over her house again for a homework session. When Saki and Kiryu-kun leave Kiryu hands Saki her summer homework packet completed. She asks why he did it and he claims he was bored, but you can tell that he did it because he cares about her.

Another romantic event occurs shortly after everyone except Hase-kun leaves. They are both in Kaori-chan’s room and things escalate quickly. She falls on her back and down goes Hase-kun on top of her. She looks into his eyes, gradually brings her hand up to touch his hair, and then mom walks in. For some reason parents always walk in at the wrong time, but luckily enough Ms. Fujiyama doesn’t make a big scene about it and exits the room. Her reaction was kind of funny actually. No yelling, no protracted awkward silence, no “You’re grounded! Hase-kun get out!”… just “Oh, am I interrupting something? Sorry!”

Its a nice step forward in both relationships, and I hope they continue to flourish and become more romantic as the season goes on.

That awkward moment when your crush is on top of you and your mom walks in….

Isshuukan Friends: Episodes 4 – 8

 Fighting with Friends: Episode 4

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 7.23.01 AM

Isshuukan Friends translates to One Week Friends in English, which is a fitting title for Kaori Fujimiya’s circumstances. Fujimiya-san suffers from amnesia regarding any events related to any and all friendships. In order to save herself from the pain of not knowing her friends the next day she isolates herself from her classmates and avoids small talk when possible, which makes her appear cold and self-righteous. Her memory overwrites the times she spend with her friends, causing her to forget everything on Mondays. Despite her condition, Hase-kun seeks the chance to get to know her better and potentially become friends. In the first few episodes he proposes the idea that she keeps a diary to remember her memories with him. Everyday he greets her by asking if they can be friends and she reads her diary to regain her memories of the previous day. In Episode 4 Fighting with Friends Fujimiya-san gets into a fight with Hase-kun on Friday because she continuously mentions how amazing Kiryu-kun is at lunch. Jealousy sets in and Hase-kun snaps… not in the traditional way that involves yelling and intense screentones, but in a “beat around the bush/shy, but passionate” kind of way.

Traditional SNAP

Hase-Kun SNAP…. Notice the difference (″・ิ_・ิ)??

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 7.14.52 AM

Fujimiya-san takes it like a champ in my opinion. She stands up declares she’s had enough of his obsessive demeanor and storms out with a sassy hair flip!! Hehehe just kidding…. he says that he’d rather talk about themselves again, and he prefers if she doesn’t speak about Kiryu all the time. (He’s a little on the coo-coo side if you ask me… you know the “I ONLY WANT YOU TO MYSELF! YOU’RE MINE! MINE! ALL MINE! DON’T TALK TO ANYONE ELSE OKEYYY BECAUSE YOU’RE MINEEEE!!!!” type, except I feel like he would forcefully whisper it with his quiet little voice.) Anyway back to my what actually happened, Fujimiya-san calls him a jerk and then storms out saying says, “You don’t understand why I’m talking about Kiryu! You don’t understand anything! Don’t follow me!”

She proceeds to loose her journal when a cute boy on a bike accidentally bumps into her and on Monday she doesn’t recall ever talking to Hase-kun or writing in a journal. In other words she almost had to start over from the beginning, but she remembered Kiryu-kun because they technically aren’t friends, and he convinces her to talk to Hase-kun. They fix things and he goes on a hunt in the grass where the hot biker boy knocked her journal out of her bag. They get all emotional with each other and he finds it then she goes home until the next day in episode 5 when EVERYTHING CHANGES … for the better!

New Friends: Episode 5

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 8.07.37 AM

FUJIMIYA-SAN GETS A NEW FRIEND!!!!! AHHHH its great ( ❝̆ ·̫̮ ❝̆ )✧!  Yamagishi Saki, Fujimiya-san’s petite forgetful classmate, follows her onto the roof and introduces herself. She announces that she wants to be friends and Fujimiya is thrilled. Immediately they begin calling each other by their first names, Saki-chan & Kaori-chan. According to Hase-kun, Saki-chan’s a little pushy about saying hi to her in class and greeting her with hugs in the morning. (He’s probs just jelly that their friendship is flourishing faster than his did (✧≖‿ゝ≖). ) Before she forgets again, Kaori explains to Saki-chan her predicament. It’s difficult for Saki to understand at first, but she still manages to tell Kaori-chan that she should enjoy life and stop worrying so much about forgetting things, because everybody forgets things sometimes.

Later that day the two friends go on a shopping spree and hang out together at the mall. Hase-kun finds out and drags Kiryu-kun along for a few hours of stalking. After peeping around corners and hiding behind vending machines he realizes that she’s safe and having lots of fun. When its time to go home Yamagishi-chan screams, “See ya later!” and Fujimiya-san does the same. In this episode she really begins to change and become more open to the idea of friendship and confiding in others.

Just a little comparison:

(Top to Bottom: Saki-chan,  Kumin Senpai)

tumblr_n6itxmMDrt1sqfwuxo1_500 tumblr_n2m27hOUc21rx7u0wo1_500

Saki-chan reminds me a lot of Kumin Senpai from Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai. I don’t know if it’s just me, but they definitely have the same type of personality. They’re both somewhat ditsy and forgetful. Senpai loves to sleep like anyone else, but to me they both give off the same “I’m just in this world to be me, sleep, and have fun with my friends!” vibe. Either way they are both adorable and super kawaii! (Comment if you agree or disagree. I’d love to hear from you!)

Mother of Friends: Episode 6

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 8.49.55 AM

Not much happened in this episode but Hase-kun begs Kaori-chan, the great mathematician, to tutor him. He asks nervously with his head bowed as they stand in their usual spot on the rooftop. She giggles & blushes then says, “Okay, we can go to my place!” As shy as he is Hase-kun immediately turns to Kiryu and asks if he will accompany them. Oddly enough at the same time Saki-chan comes busting through the door and falls at Fujimiya-san’s feet asking to be tutored and so Kaori-chan finally gets to experience what its like having friends over.

Saki-chan makes herself right at home and jumps right onto Kaori’s bed for a nice nap. Oka-san makes snacks and introduces herself to her daughters’ friends. She slips a note to Hase-kun on his way out the door asking if he will meet her in the park the next day to discuss things. When they meet we learn that Fujimiya-san was in accident when she was six. She got hit by a car and was taken to the hospital where she was unconscious & slept for several days. The doctors said there was nothing wrong with her brain, but for some reason she couldn’t remember her friends. Her mom proposes the idea that she may have what we call “selective amnesia”, meaning that she purposely blocks out events with her friends for fear of being hurt. * Alright! On to the next episode!! ٩꒰ ˘ ³˘꒱۶~♡ *

Friends of ‘Ah’ Friends of ‘Whew’ & The Beach with Friends: Episodes 7 & 8

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 9.55.03 AM

In episodes 7 & 8 Hase-kun steps up his game in the relationship department–a little bit! He asks Fujimiya-san to help him study for finals… alone… and so their friendship begins turning into the long heart-fluttering journey we call love. They meet in Inoue Sensei’s classroom to study math… and lets just say they don’t get much studying done. Literally, they don’t study, but nothing else happens either, you know? Not even the oldest trick in the book when the girl drops her pencil and the boy picks it up only to see her staring at him all googly eyed falling in love or when she trips and falls on top of him on all fours. I’m not asking for ecchi or anything that intense but come on. You’d think there’d be some fan service right about now, but no… just two buddy ol’ pals sittin’ in a room blushing for hours. Despite the lack of lovey dovey situational service Hase-kun does begin confessing how cute, reliable, and smart she is. He starts to take back the comment about her being cute because he’s nervous, but she simply says that she doesn’t believe it.  Then he shouts, “It’s true!” (I told you he’s getting more passionate!! This time he added a forceful shout instead of his usual passionate/nervous whisper that I mentioned earlier. (´ε` )♡)

Next in episode 8 Kaori-chan exclaims that she would love to go to the beach! Hase-kun jumps at the thought of going to the beach with her and he pushes the envelope a bit by mentioning that he’d love to go the beach alone with her!!!! Unlike most teenage girls who dream of taking a trip with the boy they love Fujimiya-san proceeds to say, “I’m too embarrassed to go with you on my own, so maybe another time…” ……….. I’m sorry. WHAT?!?!?! How could she pass on the perfect opportunity to go to the BEACH WITH THE BOY SHE OBVIOUSLY LIKES?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I’m physically shedding tears…they are so naive and pure.

Even Kiryu-kun agrees.

(Left to Right: Hase-kun, Kiryu-kun)

But here’s the real shocker ٩◔̯◔۶. When they were sitting alone looking at the ocean at night she said:

“I LIKE FIREWORKS????!!!!!” THAT’S WHAT YOU CAME UP WITH? I LIKE F.I.R.E.W.O.R.K.S! (ಥ﹏ಥ) I literally screamed when she said that.

Ah, this moment is too emotional. I can’t bring myself to watch episode 9 right now. ༼ ༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ༽ I’ll come back to blog that post later. Until then, see ya later.

The Good Feels and The Bad: Anime Review

By now many of you have probably scrolled through countless lists of new anime for this season & last season and checked out a few of them. This post is dedicated to a few of those that kept me hanging on to the edge of my seat while screaming at my handy dandy Mac computer, and those that made me want to roll off the bed and downstairs to find food for better means of entertainment.

*THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS*  ꒰ू ऀ•̥́ꈊ͒ੁ•ૅू॰˳ऀ꒱ ͟͟͞ ̊ ̥ ̥

(Let’s start with the bad and end on a good note shall we?)

Shows I’ve Dropped aka “The Bad Feels”:

Hamatora

tumblr_n1qj67B9Sf1trrbd9o1_500

At first I was the kid who jumps whenever shiny things are given too them, but then I realized that all that glitters isn’t gold. I liked it so much that I even wrote a post about it, but after that as the show went on the color scheme that I loved slowly turned into something I disliked. It became so flamboyant that I wasn’t interested anymore, because I expected it in every single episode. Hamatora is about people with special powers called Minimums. Each Minimum is specific to it’s host, so for example, Nice-Kun can manipulate sound & Ratio-kun’s enables him to view his enemy’s vital & weak points by removing his eye patch. The objective of the main Minimum-holders is to defeat Moral, the man creating Non-Inate Minimum-holders. The Non-Inate are artificially created Minimum-Holders. Moral is a serial killer who collects the brains of the Minimum Holders he kills and stores them for his creations. Overall the anime itself wasn’t that bad, I just got fed up with seeing such vibrant colors all the time.

Squid Girl Season 3??

Screen Shot 2014-06-04 at 12.05.34 AM

Where do I begin? … ( ’◉◞౪◟◉`). I guess I can’t really say I dropped this one since it hasn’t officially come out yet, but I figured I’d throw it in here anyway. I’ve seen forums online where people are asking for a Squid Girl season 3 and I just sit staring at my computer screen wondering why. I first watched the first season of this anime at 1am one day when I couldn’t sleep. I found it on Netflix and watched the first few episodes so I could fall asleep; I don’t know if it was the initial intention to fall asleep or the idea that Squid Girl seeks to “inkvade” man-kind. She first appears at the local restaurant on the beach announcing her plans for revenge. She says, “… This land structure is now the base of operations for my inkvasion of man kind…I’m not going to kill you right now, I’m just going to make you suffer as my dedicated servants.” Ironically enough, no one listens to her and the shop owner immediately puts her to work serving customers. I think if she was developed her revengeful ideas more and didn’t have the body of a six year old I would’ve enjoyed it more, but at the time I didn’t take a very big liking to it.

Shows that Gave Me The Feels:

Nisekoi

Screen Shot 2014-06-03 at 12.23.33 AM

I have to admit I was reeled in with the first few episodes of this anime. Interestingly enough, the plot is super simplistic. Master Raku, also known as Raku Ichijo is a teenage boy belonging to a yakuza family. He seeks to find the girl he made a promise to ten years ago. Although he can barely remember what the girl looks like, he holds on to the locket she gave him and searches for the one who holds the key. At first he thinks its Onodera, the girl he’s been crushing on for as long as he can remember. Little does he know, she’s loved him since junior high! He’s always blushing whenever they see each other and Onodera turns as red as a cherry and goes weak in the knees! … Its actually ridiculous that neither of them figured it out early on. What really gets me though is the fact that both of them think about each other all the time, to the point of fantasizing about going on dates and just spending time together… Onodera even has a year book filled with little pictures of them, but even so neither of them can tell the other how they truly feel for fear of being rejected. I guess that’s kind of the way love happens in real life to some extent, but in romantic anime they always play the naive card for a little to long (in my opinion). I mean if you’re with a guy and you’re both flirting all the time or blushing he probably likes you… that’s kinda just the way it goes.

Raku & Onodera

Screen Shot 2014-06-03 at 1.16.35 AM Screen Shot 2014-06-03 at 12.49.50 AM

Despite his hopes, Onodera isn’t the only one with a key. Chitoge, a Japanese-American transfer student, comes into the picture and they become close fairly quickly. Oddly enough, she also has a key that could potentially fit his lock. Like Ichijo she also belongs to a yakuza family and their father’s are good friends, who promised each other that their children would become boyfriend and girlfriend. When she transfers to his school they pretend to date in an effort to stay out of trouble with their families, and everything falls into place after that. They start hanging out more and eventually Onodera and Chitoge become friends. I was shocked when another girl named Marie came to town announcing that she planned to marry Raku.

At that point I thought to myself, “Who has the freakin’ key?!?!?! Is is Onodera, the love of his life? …or Chitoge the feisty Japanese-American blonde, OR the overly pushy Marie who tries to be the perfect woman for her so called husband???????”

Onodera, Chitoge, Marie

Haikyuu

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 1.32.31 PM

Its amazing how animators can make a quality anime by simply looking at one sport, and they’ve done it time and time again with Kuroko no Baske, Free: Iwatobi Swim and several others. Haikyuu is a sport based anime that follows the dreams of Hinata, a passionate little ball of energy. In junior high he is only able to play one official game of volleyball because he barely receives enough members to create a team. That’s when he meets, Kageyama, also known as “The King” on the court. When Hinata joins Kurasuno High’s volleyball club he sees none other than The King himself. Completely awestruck, the two of them begin taunting and challenging each other. In order to officially join the club as first years, Captain Daichi demands that the two develop a sense of teamwork and win the first year game. If they lose Kageyama has to forfeit his role as setter and to play another position (。•ˇ‸ˇ•。). Thankfully the two get on the team and establish a bond through their unique toss and spike coordination. They bring out the best in each other and are a force to be reckoned with.

Hinata’s top skills are believing and jumping high. He endured all types of training in an effort to become a spiker and be apart of a volleyball team.

Screen Shot 2014-06-03 at 9.59.58 AMScreen Shot 2014-06-03 at 10.00.25 AM

Kageyama is a insanely accurate setter, but he wasn’t always that way. He used to be an arrogant setter who threw lousy tosses and expected someone to spike them. When his “teammates” left him standing there with no one to spike he realized that he needed to change. It isn’t easy, but with Hinata’s faith and a solid senpai support team he is able to achieve successful tosses to his spiker.

Senpai Support Team

This anime is full of intense moments, crazy shocking faces, and cool action shots. You should definitely check it out whether you play volleyball or not; its funny and the characters have lots of emotion. (PS: If you’re looking for hilarious faces and side comments watch Tanaka-senpai in all of his greatness!! Lmao he’s great… (✧◑็அ◑็✧)❤  …wish he was my senpai!!! (ó㉨ò)ノ♡ )

Inari Kon Kon Koi Iroha

If you’re tired of action, sports, yaoi, or yuri and you want a change of pace try watching Inari Kon Kon Koi Iroha. I was tired of catching up on Naruto Shippuden and watching episodes of other flashy anime with intense camera angles, when I found this at 12 o’clock at night. Inari Fushimi is a shy middle school student who attends Kyoto Fujinokusa Middle School and visits the local shrine when she seeks comfort. An unexpected turn of events occurs after she rescues a fox spirit from the Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami, also known as Mistress Uka, god of the Inari shrine. Mistress Uka grants her one wish for her saving the fox spirit (the gods’ familiar). Inari says the first thing that comes to mind and wishes that she could be Sumizome, the girl she saw pass a note to her crush. After a night of being Sumizome she realizes that only her appearance has changed and she’s only caused trouble for the ones she loves.

Inari Fushimi’s First Wish

Screen Shot 2014-06-03 at 11.16.34 AM

Due to the rule that gods can’t grant more than one wish to a human within a short amount of time, Uka-sama can’t grant Inari’s wish to turn back into herself. Instead, she gives her a portion of her godly powers that will enable her to turn back. Unfortunately Inari begins using the power more frequently which begins to drain Uka-sama’s power. The two go to the Celestial Plains (where the gods gather) to fix the problem and seek help. Inari Kon Kon is wonderful light-hearted anime with a dash of humor and genuine love.

Hamatora

Almost everyone has that one friend who is constantly talking about one show and yelling in their face on a Monday morning because so and so didn’t kill so and so. Then by the time Wednesday rolls around they’re asking what episode you’re on and offering another “to die for” anime to add to the top of the watch list. Well for confidentiality purposes lets say my friend’s name is Kurumi-Chan. It was through these Monday morning meetings in the student lounge that she introduced me to Hamatora. So eventually I fell prey to peer pressure and decided to watch… that’s when I realized why Kurumi-Chan was so obsessed with it. As an anime geek and a graphics designer I immediately understood why it was so easy for a person to fall in love with this anime. In Hamatora there are essentially three types of people. You have the Minimum Holders, the non-innate Minimum Holders, and the average citizens who always seem to find themselves in danger. Minimum Holders are a group of the elite, if you will… they each have unique supernatural abilities, called Minimums. The non-innates are artificially designed holders, meaning they were given powers by Moral, a serial killer who collects the brains of the Minimum Holders he kills and stores them for his creations. Murdering innocent people to steal their brains and keep them for experimental purposes…. Hmmm. Tell me what’s not wrong with that?! He’s sick and twisted. The fact that anyone would want to collect human brains is beyond me…

Moral: The Man with a Strange Fetish

Hamatora-episode-4-moral

Enough about the plot and the gruesome schemes of Moral;  what really got me hooked with Hamatora was the colors. There I said it. It was the colors… not the plot or the Japanese voice overs of the characters, but the use of rudimentary colors to create such captivating scenes! Ever since episode one, I couldn’t help but notice the “Minimum Holder PI duo” also known as Nice-kun and Murasaki. Nice’s sonic minimum immediately took me by surprise. The sonic minimum is his supernatural ability that allows him to manipulate sound then travel rapidly from one point to the next to attack his opponent. He puts on his headphones in the heat of battle to perceive the ultimate sound frequency from his music and move with greater precision. The abilities he possesses also enable him to create pitch frequencies that move in circular soundwaves  for him to travel through when he snaps his fingers.

Nice-Kun’s Sonic Minimum is AWESOME! tumblr_mz22kikyvr1sdhuzuo2_500

Ratio’s minimum is my second favorite because it would be super beneficial in the real world and its just cool in general. I love how calm he is whenever he takes off his eye patch. He’s a doctor and he uses his minimum to cheat a little and heal his patients faster. Removing the eye patch lets him take a body scan of his opponents and patients to view their weak points. Then, when he’s fighting  he whips out his solid gold hands and fights with a vengeance, especially when he’s protecting his partner Birthday-kun! Ah look at me getting so excited over such little things, ha. I’m such a nerd. I’m gonna go now, oyasuminasai.

Beyond the Boundaries of Being Sick :P

Sick, Sleeping, Sneezing & Watching Anime

giphy

Currently I have a splintering headache and I’ve been falling in and out of sleep since 7 this morning. I don’t exactly know what’s wrong, but if I had to guess I’d say I have a fever and the classic case of sniffles. As of right now I’m watching Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary) and waiting for Otousan to make some breakfast. I’ve been sitting in bed for 4 hours and I feel like death. I’ve only gotten up twice… once for food and once for my laptop. Today’s just one of those days ya know…

Anyway, enough about my suffering lets discuss Beyond the Boundary!! This is my first time watching it and I’m conflicted. I can’t tell if I truly like it or if its simply background noise for this dreadful day. For those of you who don’t know, this anime is set in a world where spirits called youmu linger among the human race. The Spirit World Warriors are trained to kill all evil spirits who insist on attacking humans.

Beyond the Boundary

20130904_keyvisual01

Beyond the Boundary follows the life of Akihito Kanbara, an “immortal” highschool student who is half youmu half human. His mission is to defeat the youmu reeking havoc on human world with the help of Mirai Kuriyama, a first year highschool student who also has supernatural powers. Kuriyama-san was ostracized for her abilities to manipulate blood. Personally, I think her skill set is incredible… if anything I’d want to be friends with her and help her defeat evil spirits rather than steer clear of her. Maybe that’s because I’m merely a human longing for supernatural abilities in this world.

Nisekoi Stopped my Heart (Part 2): Kokuhaku and Rivalry

EPISODE SPOILERS! BEWARE!

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 1.36.55 AM

EPISODES 6: Kokuhaku

やれやれ, やれやれ!!! Onodera’s kokuhaku was like a dagger in my heart! She finally built up her confidence to confess her true feelings to Ichijo and a stupid baseball came flying through the window! A baseball… Why at a time like that when the poor girl was about to say the five most difficult words to say to your crush? If the ball came flying in just a moment later she could’ve gushed out all her feelings and saying, “I’m in love with you!” I can sympathize with her because its hard enough talking to a guy you have a huge crush on when you’re a nervous wreck and your heart is pounding so loudly you can barely think, but getting interrupted when you finally have the guts to confess to him really kills me.

As Onodera’s best friend, Ruri Miyamoto, decided to play the “Oh look at the time… I have that thing… that um thing I have to do! Gotta go!” card as soon as Ichijo walked into the room. Onodera was having a nervous breakdown! Her face turned beet red. Being the person that he is, Ichijo thought she was getting a fever and he immediately put his hand on her forehead to check her temperature. He frantically started compiling a list of ways he could help. Its the little things he does that makes Onodera’s heart skip a beat.

Quick, I have an idea! Let’s all touch out foreheads!

EPISODES 7-9: Rivalry

With episode 7 we definitely needed to expect the unexpected! Some things are fairly predicable, and even if you can’t predict exactly what’s going to happen you at least get the gist of the upcoming events that are about to occur. However, I never would’ve predicted that Tsugumi Seishirou was a girl. They did a great job of disguising her as a male and using foreshadowing to convince the viewers that she was actually a guy. Once her true identity was revealed I was surprised (yet again) with Tsugumi’s obsession to protect “Young Miss” or more commonly known as, Kirisaki-san. She seems to have a great deal of interest in Kirisaki. Judging by some of the scenes in this episode I would almost say that she has a little crush on Young Miss. Despite a few of the suggestive scenes, we see her true feelings were unravel by the end of episode 9. Tsugumi is without a doubt in love with none other than Raku Ichijo.

Tsugumi Seishirou… Another girl in the race to win Ichijo’s heart

tsugumi_seishirou

Ah decisions decisions. Whoever will I ship now?! Should I let fate decide and ship the lovers, Onodera and Ichijo, who were brought together by a promise a golden key and a lock? …Or should I ship the aggressive “fake” couple, who happens to have the ultimate love-hate relationship. Of course, we can’t forget about the new rival, Tsugumi-san… the girl who holds a gun to her crush’s head and five-stars him on the cheek for asking a question or flirtatiously insulting Kirisaki-san.

Let the Rivalry Begin!!

Order: Onodera x Ichijo, Kirisaki x Ichijo, Tsugumi x Ichijo

Nisekoi Stopped my Heart

Nisekoi. NisEkOi…. NISEKOIIIIIIII!!!! My heart just died. I am watching episode two of Nisekoi and I’m already screaming at my laptop as I shove popcorn in my face… literally.

My face exactly…

I love the dynamics between the main character, Raku Ichijo, and the new transfer student Chitoge Kirisaki. Kirisaki-San is half Japanese, half American. At first glance she seems to be the tall hot  blonde that everyone adores, but we learned in the first episode that she’s quite the opposite.  In episode one she’s racing the clock in an effort to get to school on time and she does a flying somersault into the air as she jumps over the 7ft tall fence. All the while, she’s eating breakfast!

In a flash she hops the fence and knees Ichijo in the face. Poor boy, he just wants to lead a normal life, but that’s nearly impossible seeing as tho he is the son of a Yakuza family. The gang living in Ichijo’s house treat him  like a king; they jump whenever he said how high. While some people would love to have such a lively gang of people waiting on them hand and foot, he only tolerates it because he has to. Ichijo’s father, the Yazuka Boss, meets an old friend who coincidentally happens to be the head of another gang and Kirisaki’s father. In an effort to terminate the gang war and end the violence the two forced Ichijo and Kirisaki to date. And so we have the classic couple that isn’t technically a “couple”, but acts like one on the surface to please others… but in actuality they are constantly arguing and getting in trivial fights over all the little things that normal couples would enjoy. Their fights then lead them to realize that they actually do have more in common, and I assume that one of them will drop their guard and fall in love. It will most likely be Kirisaki-san. When the two “lovers” went on their first fake date to fool the gang members of their respective families they went to the park. Kirisaki went to the bathroom and while she was gone Ichijo ran into little miss Onodera. She’s the one he dreams about taking on a date, and when they bumped into each other his  heart skipped a beat. Ten years ago he was given a locket and the girl who gave it to him kept the key. On that day they made a promise to that one day they would be reunited and get married, little does he know that the girl he’s been crushing on is the same girl from ten years ago. However, he has a hunch that Onodera’s the one, but having Kirisaki in the picture complicates things. When he opened his mouth to ask if she had the key to his lock Kirisaki came flying in saying, “Darling, I’m back!”

After an awkward session of explaining to Onodera that they weren’t actually dating, Ichijo pulls out the locket. “This… this locket. I was wondering if you’d ever seen it somewhere before you saw it yesterday?”, he asks. My heart was thumping rapidly in my chest as I waited for her response, and you know what she said? SHE SAID, “No. Never. Not once.” She said it with a smile on her face as her hair blew in the wind. AHHHH, I wanted to jump through the screen and slap her. How could she lie to the boy she loves?! The one who she made a promise with?! …. The one who has the lock that fits her key perfectly.

Onodera! How could you?!

The Wind Rises (Kazetachinu)

Hayao Miyazaki

Screen Shot 2014-03-07 at 8.37.12 PM

I just went to see Hayao Miyazaki’s last movie, Kazetachinu or The Wind Rises. He’s claimed that he was going to retire a few times before, but for some reason I actually feel like this is the one. The Wind Rises has a more serious tone than his other movies, which really makes it feel like he is done for good.

The plot of Kazetachinu entails a love story between a young man named, Jiro Horikoshi and a girl named Naoko Satomi. Jiro’s life long dream is to become an aeronautical designer who creates a plane that the Japanese can truly be proud to call their own. As a young dreamer he was constantly reaching to achieve success and make his dream become a reality. Sometimes he would get so caught up in his day dreams that he would become completely oblivious to the people surrounding him in the real world. Haha, it was really inspiring to see him so engaged and involved with his work. As corny and cliché as this sounds, Jiro’s character showed me that if you put your mind to it you really can do anything. Kazetachinu is a historical film recounting parts of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. Miyazaki and his team clearly portrayed the magnitude of the quake through the massive destruction of buildings and intense explosions. But it all happened so quickly… one minute Jiro’s on the train, then the earthquake destroys the town, and everyone runs off the train in a panic. This was the only scene that I thought happened a little too quickly, but regardless of the speed it was wonderful to see how Jiro reacted and immediately went to help a woman who had fallen. In some ways it reminded me of  Grave of the Fireflies because of the way Jiro deals with tragedy. Like Seita, Jiro embraces the bright side of life despite the earthquake and the demands to create an airplane that holds bombs rather than people.

Caproni, an Italian Mastermind

My favorite scene was when Jiro fell asleep and met Caproni, a famous aeronautical engineer, in his dream. This scene was truly incredible. Miyazaki really captured the magical aspect of dreaming, from the clouds the plane flying above Jiro and Caproni… the scene was beautiful. Although this wasn’t my absolute favorite Ghibli film it was heartfelt and told a unique love story. I recommend it not only to all of you die hard Studio Ghibli fans, but also to those of you who have a dream. Kazetachinu (The Wind Rises) teaches us that although everything doesn’t always go as planned in life there is still hope, and despite any setbacks or obstacles you may face you have to get up and keep striving to make your dreams become a reality.

New 2014 Anime!

For starters, I know its late because it’s already March but that’s okay! I typed this in mid Janurary, but here ya go!

I’ve been through many been through many lists of this year’s new animes and these are the few that seem intriguing and worth laughing, screaming, and/or fangirling over.

Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai: Ren (Season 2)

Screen Shot 2014-01-11 at 10.17.06 PM

Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai (season 1) is an anime about a boy named Yuuta Togashi, who just recently got over his obsession with magic and his other adolescent fantasies. As soon as he puts that behind him, the girl who lives above him, Rikka Takanashi, appears with an obsession that is even worse than his was! (Great timing right?) Rikka has an extreme case of the 8th grade syndrome, which involves extreme levels of adolescent delusions in her mythical world, and intense battles between enemies.

Finally season 2 is coming out this year!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for this for (what feels like) an eternity. This season will include mecha battles, between Rikka and her jealous friend, Dekomori, who fears loosing her “master” to Yuuta (aka The Dark Flame Master). While Yuuta and Rikka begin to get closer, Dekomori swoops in and the battles begin. If you are wondering who the girl shoving her face in Rikka’s, she is a new character in season 2  who will most definitely cause some issues with Rikka and Yuuta’s binding love contract.

Noragami

Screen Shot 2014-01-19 at 10.39.02 PM

Unlike most akuma (demons + action) anime that I’ve seen so far, Noragami is refreshing, action packed, and funny. Yato, a jersey wearing boy who refers to himself as a god, but he can’t afford to buy a shrine. Even if he has no sacred treasure, he is determined to make ends meet; and what better way to do that than by writing his contact information on the walls of buildings? He charges 5 yen for his services. Along the way he meets a girl named Hiyori Iki, who has a troubled spirit and soul. Hiyori comes from a respectable family with certain expectations, but behind her parents back she watches martial arts. She’s just about as passionate about martial arts as I (and probably most of you reading this) are about watching anime.  She is without a doubt an interesting character, who plays the role of a good girl with a fighting spirit. When she meets Yato on the street, everything in her life begins to change. Not only does her spirit waver between realms/worlds, but she can also see a boy who none of her friends see. I’m going to leave you with that, but this anime has a lot of potential and I can’t wait for the next episode! Just in case you haven’t started it yet, click episode 1 to watch!

Pupa

Pupa

Pupa. Pupa. Pupa… Where do I begin? This is the first horror anime I have watched, and I can honestly say that it is by far the creepiest show I have ever seen (mostly because I never watch creepy shows, but its good…). It is scary, and suspenseful and makes me want to look away, but at the same time I can’t seem to peel my eyes away from the screen. It is horrifyingly amazing! [First episode summary:] Utsutsu’s little sister, Yume, simply wants to go home with her brother, but on that day she sees red butterflies and her world completely turns upside down. Shortly thereafter, the virus Pupa infects Yume and she turns into a man eating monster! (My reaction: *Keeps eyes wide open, but also screams at the sight of Yume succumbing to Pupa*) One part of me was telling me to stop watching it because I might have collapsed from the fear but the other part of me was saying, “Keep watching! Find out what happens next!” I didn’t know which I will listen to, but Pupa is terrifying and awesome. So, if you like horror anime,  then check it out.

Sword Art Online (SAO: Season 2)

Yuuki Asuna

Well, if you don’t know who the girl is in the picture above her name is Asuna. She is among the 10000 players who are trapped in the complex VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) called Sword Art Online. Kirigaya Kazuto, who is most commonly referred to as Kirito, is a legend in SAO. He is a former beta tester, and like the other players he must fight to survive not only in the game but also in the real world. The Nerve Gear (a helmet that allows people to login to SAO) has the potential to harm the player’s physical body in the real world, once they reach a certain point in Sword Art Online’s virtual reality game. As the season progresses the Nerve Gear begins to affect many people and their families. The intensity of the game and the emotions of each player is what makes SAO such a heart-jerking, mind-boggling anime. Sword Art Online involves all of the love, humor, and “Oh my gosh, that did not just happen! Please don’t die! I love chuuuu!” scenes that you are hoping to see. The battle scenes are stunning and kept me on the edge of my seat when I watched them for the first time. My heart was literally pounding during Kirito’s battle with the Guardians of the World Tree. Haha, come to think of it… I was actually screaming at my laptop and gripping the handles of my chair. Furthermore, the soundtrack is always on point with every battle and it completely expresses everything my heart is feeling. Not only is the OST (Original Sountrack) wonderful, but the “camera” angles also add so much depth and power to each scene. ASCII Media Works released a special episode on Crunchyroll earlier this month, you can click here to watch it.
